Introduction

The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) is the national government agency responsible for collecting, compiling, analyzing, and disseminating official statistics in Sri Lanka. It provides reliable statistical information to support national planning, policy formulation, research, and evidence-based decision-making. The Department operates under the Ministry of Finance and is the country's official authority for census and statistical activities.

District Branches of the Department of Census and Statistics represent the Department at the district level. We coordinate and implement statistical activities within Our respective districts while maintaining close collaboration with Divisional Secretariats, government institutions, private organizations, and the general public.

Main Functions of District Branches

1. Conduct the Population and Housing Census and other national censuses.

2. Carry out household and establishment surveys.

3. Collect, verify, process, and submit statistical data.

4. Compile district-level socio-economic indicators.

5. Publish district statistical information and reports.

6. Coordinate field data collection through Statistical Officers and Enumerators.

7. Provide statistical information to governmment agencies, reseachers, students and the public.

8. Monitor data quality and ensure confidentiality in accordance with the Census Ordinance and Statistics Ordinance.
